Teaching follows an inquiry-based, person-centered approach, which will build on your existing skills. It also incorporates shared learning with other disciplines and professions, developing your clinical leadership skills and preparing you for practice.

Students from all disciplines have the opportunity to undertake a two years Master program in Adult nursing and this program would prepare them towards attaining evidence 2,300 hours of theoretical learning and 2,300 practice learning (4,600 hours in total) in order to be eligible to apply for registration as a Registered Nurse.

You will work with staff and clinical partners as co-producers in your learning experience.

Once you have completed the program and registered with the NMC, most people get some experience as a staff nurse, usually within community or in-patient organizations operating within the NHS, voluntary and independent sectors of health. The opportunities are endless but some ‘typical’ career options are presented below.

Some people are keen to remain working directly with service users in clinical areas and seek promotion to senior staff nurse or ward sister/manager roles where their expertise is used to lead care given by a team of nurses. Some adult nurses develop particular clinical skills and knowledge that will allow them to become specialist nurses in a given area of care (e.g. district nurse, clinical nurse specialist or nurse consultant).

As an adult nurse, your patients might have long-term illnesses or minor health issues, and they could be at any stage in their adult life. On this two-year accelerated course, you’ll learn how to assess your patient’s needs and provide sensitive support, and how to collaborate with colleagues across a range of professions (including doctors, physiotherapists and dieticians).

In addition to time spent in practice on placement, you’ll have a mix of simulated and technology-enhanced learning, university attendance in shared groups, field-specific groups, or interdisciplinary learning.

Working in small groups in our Clinical Simulation Suite, you’ll learn many skills to support the development of your practice. It’s here that you’ll work on simulations of a patient’s journey from admission to discharge.

Recognising the changing context of healthcare and the profile of nurses needed, the MSc Nursing Studies aims to equip graduate student nurses with advanced critical thinking skills, as well as practical skills and competencies to deliver compassionate, competent, person-centred, effective, safe and high quality health care.

MSc graduates will be expected make a significant contribution to ‘improving lives’ at an individual, community and global level. While working in partnership with health and social care professionals to meet the needs of patients, clients and service users, they will also contribute to public health outcomes through education and health improvement interventions.

​During the course, you develop the essential knowledge and nursing skills required to care for people and their families in a variety of diverse settings, including hospital and community care. During these placements, you participate in shift work, including weekends and night. This innovative course prepares you to become a confident and competent skilled practitioner, capable of leading and managing the care of people and their families. It also helps you to become a resilient and future-ready nurse who holds strong professional values, is able to exercise clinical judgement, challenge inequality, champion diversity and uphold the integrity of the profession whilst delivering high quality, person-centred compassionate care.

The programmes for all three fields, adult, mental health and Children's and Young People nursing incorporate the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s new standards of proficiencies 2019. They represent the skills, knowledge and attributes all registered nurses must demonstrate.

Service users, carers and the wider community are actively involved in the development, delivery and running of this programme. Service users and carers share their experiences with students at the university and are involved in providing students with feedback in clinical practice, as well as being involved in recruitment and assessment activities.

The course programme comprises of 50% practice and 50% theory. You will be allocated to one of several NHS Trusts within the Central Lancashire region as your base and from there gain experience in a range of placement areas.

The clinical placements will be interspersed throughout the two years course and you will be supervised, assessed and supported by relevant health care professionals and the University. As part of your clinical experience, you will be expected to work full time alongside practice supervisors who will support your learning journey through each placement area. As a result, you are expected to work a range of different shift patterns across a 24 hour, seven day period throughout the year.

There may be an opportunity to undertake an alternative or international placement during the course.
